As I write, Krinkles eagerly awaits the freezing of his “pupsicle” (thank you, Pinterest!) – a big chunk of ice encasing a few of his favorite doggie toys and some yummy treats. It’s been so “Africa-hot” here in California, that I knew I had to find something for our K9-kid to ease the lethargic effects of this sweltering, humid heat (who said beach houses don’t need A/C!?!).
This frozen treat will not only cool off your dog, but will also provide her/him with something to exercise their brain. Destruction and unwanted behavior is often due to boredom, so, this will also be a wonderful way to entertain your four-legged kid!
Pupsicle Supplies:
• plastic bowl – we used a fairly large chip bowl.
• doggie toys – be sure to use toys that can be submerged in water
• doggie treats – such as carrots, celery, apples, bully sticks, etc.
Pupsicle How-to:
1.Fill large, plastic bowl with your pup’s favorite toys. She/He’ll be much more motivated to work her/his way to each toy if she/he really wants it!
2. Fill bowl with water high enough to cover toys and treats. It makes sense that, the more water that’s in the bowl, the bigger the pupsicle!
3. Place in freezer until frozen (uh…was that obvious?). Note: cover with a heavy plate – it will help keep toys submerged. Be sure to remove it after an hour to prevent sticking to the toys.
4. Pull out and allow to melt enough to remove from bowl. You can also run the bottom of the bowl under warm water until it starts to melt. Also, don’t worry if there are toys sticking out the top…this will get your dog started!
5. Place outside on the grass or in a plastic pool. What’s especially great about this treat is that it’s made of water, so there is no worries of staining if they inadvertently bring it inside.
Let your pup enjoy!!!
NOTE: you should ALWAYS monitor your dog(s) whenever they play with their toys.
